Without doubt, Alice Springs is the most interesting place that I have visited, so far in Australia. Until now, I was reluctant to choose which the most beautiful spot was. Australia has some stunning scenery and it would be almost impossible to select one favourite place. I have just arrived on Hamilton Island, one of the 74 Whitsunday Islands, on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. Its early days yet but we might have a contender. After I’ve checked into my “bungalow”, I will head out with my camera and take some photos. Then you can help me to decide.
I have started reading Bill Bryson’s book “Down Under”. It was recommended by my friend, Cathy Holahan before my holiday, so I downloaded it to my Kindle. I am glad that I waited until I had experienced Australia before I read this book. Now I can associate so easily with the Australia that he portrays with such perception and wit. The sheer size of the country, the friendly, laid back culture and the relaxed attitude of Australians to risk, (particularly risks of nature, sharks, snakes, etc.), were some of the things that surprised me most in the 3 weeks since I arrived. I am really enjoying the book, Thanks Cathy for the recommendation.
